I'm Helena Geeraert, a budding photographer captivated by the magic of the lens. My journey is fueled by an insatiable curiosity for the extraordinary and a deep appreciation for overlooked subtleties. The world, to me, is a canvas awaiting the brushstrokes of the unconventional. My mission is to expand the human gaze, infusing it with the surreal intricacies that reside in my mind. I aim to impart a unique perspective, marrying the ordinary with the surreal to create a distinct visual narrative that speaks to the expansiveness of human perception.

BERTOLAZZI

In the realm of my creative endeavors, Lelie Bertolazzi emerges as more than just a subject; she is my muse. Working with her transcends the ordinary act of capturing images, reaching a realm where creativity takes flight. Lelie possesses an innate ability to grasp and resonate with my artistic aspirations, lifting the art of image-making to new heights.

The Blossoming Fruit Tree in the Cave

The artwork that captivated me was Carl Fredrik Hill's "Blooming Fruit Tree in Cave," created after 1878. It's a relatively small piece, especially when compared to the other works displayed. Perhaps that's what drew me even more to it, as I tend to appreciate beauty in the details. Executed in charcoal, Hill employs various shades of gray. I, too, enjoy working with charcoal—it's an honest medium, both pure and versatile. It possesses the lines, yet it can be as dark as a solid plane.

The artwork exudes a profound sense of mystery. The title, "Blooming Fruit Tree in Cave," is enchanting, carrying rich symbolism that invites personal interpretation. For me, the fruit tree evoked the image of someone blossoming fully when forging their own path, free from societal norms. Serenely nestled in its cave, the fruit tree stands apart from the leafless trees above, each dutifully following the collective. Against the current, the fruit tree finds its own stream, where it can flourish

There's something profoundly mesmerizing about the process of distilling a singular object, intricately carving it into abstraction, only to witness it gracefully return to its two-dimensional essence. The allure of stamping and relief lies not only in the intricate process but also in the narrative it imparts—a tale of deconstruction and reconstruction, of embracing and shedding dimensions.

Botswana, a true playground for a creator, is a symphony of stimuli that ignites every sense, making it an unparalleled source of inspiration.

IN SE

in the gentle cadence of this series, we embark on a journey of self-disappearing, a tranquil voyage into the sanctuary of solitude. It is a narrative of withdrawing, gracefully losing oneself in the quiet recesses of the mind.

It's an exploration of letting the spirit wander, meandering with the flow of verses, towards timeless places and tender sentiments.

Through the lens, I found a world I had not anticipated, a quiet yet vibrant symphony that paints a vivid portrait of a culture both ancient and timeless.

Exploring Japan with my nephew and grandmother, this series is aptly named "Hashimoto." Initially, my nephew believed it meant "hello" in Japanese, but later we discovered it was a medical condition. This innocent mix-up now adds a whimsical touch to our visual journey, turning language confusion into cherished memories.

analoge

In my nascent journey into analog photography, I've discovered a profound beauty in its fragility. The delicate dance between light and exposure, the intricacies of development—each step holds the potential for imperfection, making every photo a precious artifact. With analog, every click reveres composition as king, a stark contrast to the swift post-processing of digital photography. In this realm, the risk of flaws transforms into the allure that makes each frame uniquely valuable.

This series feels like being shaken and suddenly finding oneself in an unfamiliar realm, a place where disorientation reigns. It's a journey into the unknown, where each frame resonates with a haunting sense of estrangement, inviting viewers to navigate the contours of an uncharted emotional landscape.

candelabra

Candelabra delves into the intrinsic elegance and drama encapsulated within a candelabrum—an ostensibly lifeless entity that, when paired with the feminine, transforms into a dance of sublime power. Together, they weave a narrative where the candelabrum becomes an embodiment of graceful strength, a dramatic interplay of dark silhouettes hovering against a backdrop of crimson allure.

This collection is a tribute to the overlooked, the small establishments we casually pass by, marked by their subtle greenish glow of fluorescent lights. Within these unassuming spaces, a myriad of stories unfold, with the distinct hum of the lights bearing witness to the charm within.

TRÈS PLASTIQUE

With this series, I've delved into the intriguing contrasts of plastic: the transparency and opacity, the gloss and matte textures, all flowing together in a sculptural dance of contradictions. This journey began when I stumbled upon large pieces of plastic in a company's dumpster. The material immediately intrigued me, prompting me to experiment with it, inspired by the shapes and possibilities it presented.
